born in the far west of cornwall - the area known as west penwith - I suppose I was from a young age influenced by the motion and rhythms of cloud, wind and breaking seas - all illuminated by extraordinary light, playing on the mysterious shapes of granite cliffs, tors and megaliths
growing up within this landscape gave me a deep appreciation of natural beauty - and a respectful awareness of the power of the sea and its ever changing conditions
the place draws you in with an almost hypnotic force - like a secret buried deep in the ground - not always something you can see, but something you feel
music too plays a very important part of my life, and I can certainly see the similarities with photography - the technical disciplines involved in both, as well as the multi-sensory processing that goes on in simplifying and refining framing and composition - speeding up reactions and heightening overall awareness and sensitivity - it occurs on an intuitive level but derives from practice and repetition
I find that by breaking free from certain prescribed forms allows true expression and freedom from deliberate actions to flourish - many of my images involve multiple exposures and intentional camera movement - the results from which are often surprising.
